Jamuary's Roots: A Jamily TraditionIt's hard to say when the first Jamuary was held, but it certainly began in Dan and Therese Scott's basement in Warren, Michigan in the early 80s. The concept was simple: Invite a bunch of musicians, add freinds, food, and drink, and booyah -- a good time ensues!
Jamuary eventually progressed to a hall in Royal Oak. This was the largest and best -- and snowiest -- Jamuary to that date! It was organized with folk, blues, jazz, alternative, and dance music. There were many bands, solos, duets, etc., all with common themes of improvisation, fun, and entertainment. Did we mention talent? As would be expected, life progressed and kids came along. Responsibility replaced jam-ability, (not to mention, our first 'kid' was born in mid-January). We didn't want it to end, but sadly it did. Some 26-or-so years later...It. Is. Revived! Once again, Dan and Therese were excited to host Jamuary2013, and it was a great success with 92 guests and musicians in attendance at $5 a head! Many of the artists who have joined us in the past returned the next time around, as well as the many more new faces and talents. And we hope you will join us! |
